The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating after a police office near Thunder Bay, Ont., shot and wounded a man who fired on a police cruiser with a shotgun.

The 58-year-old man was spotted at 2:18 p.m. Thursday walking along Highway 11/17 about 30 kilometres west of Thunder Bay on Pebblestone Road.

Callers to 911 reported he was carrying a shotgun, the SIU said in a news release.

“Officers responded and located the man,” the SIU said.

“The man discharged his firearm and struck a police cruiser. The officer was not struck by gunfire. An officer shot the man.”

Paramedics arrived and took the man to hospital, where he is being treated for a serious injury.

“No police officers were injured,” the release said.

“One subject official and one witness official have been designated at this time. Three investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case.”

The SIU is asking anyone with information about the investigation — including video or photos — to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529 or online.
