New Hampshire recruit Shan Masood praised the “team effort” of his side after they won a thrilling opening Global Super League game in Guyana.

The Hawks beat Bangladesh club Rangpur Riders in a super over at the Providence Stadium on Wednesday night.

Masood scored 56 off 41 balls on his debut as Hampshire ended their T20 innings on 132, a total the Riders managed to tie.

After Riders scored 12-1 from their extra six deliveries, Hampshire’s Liam Dawson smashed the penultimate ball of his side’s super over into the stands for a six to ensure victory.

“What a game it was, a great debut,” Masood told BBC Radio Solent., external

“There were some great words spoken by the captain Chris Wood, who said we had to fight for every run because in this competition run rate can come into play.

“James Fuller was also brilliant and it was a great team effort – we had a few slips in each department but I think everyone made up for it in one way for the other.”

Hampshire announced just days before the start of the tournament that Masood would play for them in the inaugural GSL on a short-term deal.

Masood is Pakistan men’s Test captain and led them to a 2-1 series victory against England in October, scoring a century in the first match.

Hawks’ usual captain James Vince is missing the tournament as he is contracted to play for Delhi Bulls in the Abu Dhabi T10 competition.

“I had no idea how this [deal] came about,” Masood added.

“I was playing first-class cricket in Pakistan, we were almost done with our season and my agent said that [Hants director of cricket] Giles White had called and wanted me to play for Hampshire.

“I thought it was a great opportunity – one of my really close friends, Mo Abbas, is a hero at Hampshire so he messaged me and said the lads would be really good with me and it was a great proposition.

“It’s a great club and I’m really glad that it worked out.”

Hampshire next take on the Lahore Qalandars in the GSL on Saturday, 30 November.
