Potter set to be reunited with Chelsea analyst

Monday 20 January 2025 15:00 , Matt Verri

West Ham are closing in on an agreement with Chelsea to reunite manager Graham Potter with trusted recruitment guru Kyle Macaulay.

While Macaulay is being targeted as a recruitment analyst, his arrival at West Ham could be seen as a blow to under-pressure technical director Tim Steidten, whose position has been criticised due to a mixed bag of results in terms of signings under his watch.

Macaulay, 38, worked with Potter at Chelsea, Brighton, Swansea and Ostersunds and has the long-term trust of the newly-appointed Hammers head coach.

West Ham are understood to be finalising a compensation package that will give the green light for Macaulay to leave Chelsea and move to the London Stadium.

Chelsea to lose transfer guru Macaulay to Potter’s West Ham

Monday 20 January 2025 13:27

Plenty going on at Chelsea today it would appear.

While the club have apparently agreed a deal to sign Strasbourg defender Mamadou Sarr, they are losing someone else to West Ham.

The Telegraph report that the Hammers have struck a deal to reunite Chelsea recruitment analyst Kyle Macaulay with Graham Potter, the man who took him to Stamford Bridge after the pair previously worked together at Brighton.

However, it sounds like the Blues’ head of global goalkeeping Ben Roberts is staying at the club rather than linking back up with Potter at West Ham.

Rashford wants Barcelona move as AC Milan deadline nears

Monday 20 January 2025 12:00 , George Flood

So what’s the latest on Marcus Rashford?

20 days into the January transfer window and the England forward has still yet to secure an exit from Manchester United despite being dropped by Ruben Amorim and having publicly declared his desire for a fresh challenge elsewhere.

Rashford was said earlier this month to have rejected big-money moves to Saudi Arabia, with the likes of AC Milan, Borussia Dortmund, Juventus and Napoli all believed to be interested in his services, amid far more tentative links to domestic rivals including Chelsea, Tottenham and West Ham.

United understandably do not want the 27-year-old to join another Premier League team.

Reports from ESPN claim that Rashford has until today to decide on a potential loan switch to Milan, with Dortmund possibly still in the race but the player himself said to be hoping that Barcelona can yet make a deal work.

Guardiola accepts concerns over Haaland extension

Sunday 19 January 2025 10:54 , Alex Young

Pep Guardiola accepts Erling Haaland’s bumper new contract could prevent Manchester City signing any more top-level strikers.

The City manager’s comments come as the club appear to be closing in on a deal for Eintracht Frankfurt forward Omar Marmoush.

Guardiola said: “The bigger strikers will not come to be a replacement for Erling, so we have to find them young to accept the role.

“Or they’re different players – like Oscar (Bobb), (James) McAtee, Phil (Foden), and maybe without Erling we’ll play a different way, with a false nine, with alternatives, with more runners from outside, more runners for the channels inside. We will find solutions.

“We could not go to sign (Kylian) Mbappe, for example, as a top-class player because normally we play with just one striker.

“But of course we have alternatives just in case Erling cannot play all the minutes. We have other options.”

Maresca confirms Chelsea transfer stance after ‘disaster’

Sunday 19 January 2025 08:28 , Alex Young

Enzo Maresca says Chelsea do not need to sign a “killer” striker, insisting Nicolas Jackson will soon hit form in front of goal.

Chelsea, who host Wolves on Monday night, have been linked with January moves for a whole host of strikers — speculation which Maresca deemed a “disaster” on Friday — but the club are hopeful that Jackson will become more clinical if given time.

The Senegal international scored 17 goals in all competitions for the Blues last season but also drew criticism for misfiring from a number of presentable chances.

Asked whether the Blues are looking to make a statement signing in attack, Maresca said: “No, because I think by being a little bit more lucky, we can convert and can score more goals.

“It’s not about [signing] a ‘killer’. In this moment, the one that’s probably missing the goal is Nico. But the way he is working is fantastic, and we don’t have any doubt that Nico is soon going to start scoring goals.”

Arteta sends clear transfer message with Liverpool comparison

Sunday 19 January 2025 08:09 , Alex Young

Mikel Arteta says Arsenal are “very short” in attack and need reinforcements after they dropped more points in the title race by drawing with Aston Villa.

The Gunners had been two goals to the good against Villa, but conceded twice in the space of eight second-half minutes to draw.

Arsenal are now six points off Premier League leaders Liverpool, who earlier on Saturday beat Brentford thanks to two late goals.

Darwin Nunez was Liverpool’s hero, coming off the bench to score twice, and it was in stark contrast to Arsenal’s attacking options.

Raheem Sterling was Arsenal’s only fit senior forward on the bench and Arteta admits they need to add while the January transfer window is open.

“When you look at the performances, I don’t know how many teams are playing at this level on the league, but when you look at the bench, probably you say, I think we are very short,” he said.

Man Utd hopeful of beating Arsenal to Viktor Gyokeres

Saturday 18 January 2025 12:07 , George Flood

Manchester United are said to be confident of beating Arsenal to a deal for Viktor Gyokeres.

The Premier League rivals are generally considered as the two main players in the race to bring Sporting Lisbon’s prolific former Coventry striker back to English football in 2025.

Arsenal have been said to be pondering a deal for Gyokeres as they are also linked with the likes of Benjamin Sesko, Dusan Vlahovic, Bryan Mbeumo, Yoane Wissa, Randal Kolo Muani and even Evan Ferguson at Brighton.

However, The Independent report that Manchester United are hopeful of winning the race for the Swedish international and reuniting him with former Sporting boss Ruben Amorim at Old Trafford at the end of the season.

Arsenal hoping to sign Nypan after Zubimendi deal

Saturday 18 January 2025 11:54 , George Flood

A midfield regeneration plan looks just as important to Arsenal as their hunt for a new striker as they look to win the race for Sverre Nypan now.

The Gunners are already expected to trigger the £51m Real Sociedad release clause of Spain’s Martin Zubimendi in the summer and Standard Sport understands they are also chasing a deal for Rosenborg’s teenage starlet.

Nypan, 18, has interest from several major suitors as one of Europe’s brightest young prospects and could be allowed to leave Norway – where it’s currently the off-season – for a fee of just over £10m.

This one could be resolved fairly soon it sounds like, and Arsenal will hope that Nypan jumps at the chance to join compatriot Martin Odegaard at the Emirates Stadium.

Chelsea handed new boost in Alejandro Garnacho race

Saturday 18 January 2025 11:48

Chelsea may have been handed a key new boost in the race for Alejandro Garnacho.

Shock reports first emerged yesterday that the Blues were keen on a deal for the Manchester United academy graduate, having been already linked with Kobbie Mainoo this month.

It is rumoured that Chelsea are seeking reassurances over Garnacho’s temperament following his rocky start under Ruben Amorim at Old Trafford, with Napoli already said to be in hot pursuit of his signature after seeing an opening offer worth around £40m rebuffed by United earlier this week after selling Khvicha Kvaratskhelia to PSG.

However, The Mirror now report that Napoli will look elsewhere in their bid to replace the Georgian star, potentially leaving Chelsea a free run at Garnacho.

Arsenal plot £70m Benjamin Sesko bid

Saturday 18 January 2025 11:41 , George Flood

Arsenal are said to be pondering a huge bid for Benjamin Sesko this month.

The Gunners are notably short on firepower in the Premier League title race with Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Jesus and Ethan Nwaneri all currently out injured, leaving them with just four fit senior forwards to choose from as things stand.

Arsenal had looked likely to splash the cash on bolstering their frontline in the summer, though Mikel Arteta himself has admitted that their transfer plans for the end of the season could yet be brought forward.

RB Leipzig striker Sesko is a long-term target along with the likes of Viktor Gyokeres, with The Sun reporting that Arsenal are currently weighing up whether to launch a massive £70m offer for the Slovenian international or else make do with a short-term loan agreement for another, likely lesser target.

Arsenal face fight as Real Madrid make Saliba contact

Saturday 18 January 2025 08:40 , George Flood

Arsenal could face a huge fight to keep hold of William Saliba.

Along with Gabriel, the French centre-back has formed arguably the best defensive partnership in the Premier League over recent seasons having grabbed his Gunners chance with both hands following loan stints with Saint-Etienne, Nice and Marseille.

The 23-year-old is rated by most as one of the very best in his position on the planet, with interest in his signature mounting from Real Madrid.

Foot Mercato in France report that Los Blancos want to sign Saliba this summer and are ramping up their pursuit, having already apparently made contact with his entourage.

Madrid are also said to be keen on Tottenham’s Micky van de Ven and Josko Gvardiol at Manchester City, as well as Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold of course.

Along with that of Marcus Rashford, the Argentine winger’s future at Old Trafford has become subject to doubt amid a struggle to establish himself under Ruben Amorim.

Napoli are believed to be leading the race for Garnacho after agreeing to sell Georgian forward Khvicha Kvaratskhelia to PSG, having apparently seen an opening bid worth around £40m rejected by United.

Now French outlet L’Equipe report that Chelsea – who have already been linked with Kobbie Mainoo this month – could launch a stunning move for Garnacho with Christopher Nkunku believed to be on the way out as they also target Borussia Dortmund’s Karim Adeyemi, who has also reportedly been subject to an offer from Napoli.

Palace insisted that Esse had to join immediately rather than remaining at Championship side Millwall on loan, with a medical scheduled for later on today.

Saturday’s London derby at West Ham will come too early for the England Under-20 international’s debut, so it could be that next weekend’s visit of Brentford to Selhurst Park will see his first Palace involvement instead.

Haaland backed to create ‘incredible legacy’ at Man City

Friday 17 January 2025 09:10 , George Flood

Here’s outgoing Manchester City director of football Txiki Begiristain on Erling Haaland’s huge new contract…

“Everyone at the Club is absolutely delighted that Erling has signed his new contract,” he said.

“The fact he is signed for so long demonstrates our commitment to him as a player, and his love of this club.

“He has made an incredible impact already in his time here and his amazing numbers and records speak for themselves.

“But in addition to his outstanding natural talent and ability, Erling’s dedication, professionalism, humility and desire to keep getting better sum up what we all strive to achieve at Manchester City.

“He is one of the finest strikers in world football, but Erling is still very young and will only continue to improve working under Pep and his coaching team.

“If he works hard, which I know he will, he will create an incredible legacy at this football club.

“Now he can focus on his game and continuing to play a huge part in helping us try to achieve even more success.”

Haaland speaks as new Man City mega-deal made official

Friday 17 January 2025 09:06 , George Flood

That new mega-deal for Erling Haaland at Manchester City is now official.

They describe it as a 10-year contract, though really it’s nine-and-a-half given that it’s confirmed to run until the summer of 2034.

City said: “Everyone at City is delighted with the news and we all wish Erling every success during the remainder of his time here.”

Commenting on the deal, Haaland said: “I am really happy to have signed my new contract and to be able to look forward to spending even more time at this great Club.

“Manchester City is a special Club, full of fantastic people with amazing supporters and it’s the type of environment that helps bring the best out of everybody.

“I also want to thank Pep, his coaching staff, my teammates and everyone at the Club as they have all helped me so much in the past couple of years. They have made this such a special place to be and now I am City no matter what.

“I want to keep developing, keep working to get better and look to do my best to try and help us achieve more success going forward.”

Haaland, it is worth noting, will be 33 by the time his new contract at the Etihad Stadium ends.

Last night we heard from Benjamin Sesko’s agent amid those latest rumours over transfer talks with Arsenal.

Fabrizio Romano now has more from Elvis Basanovic, who told GiveMeSport: “Even if we’re aware of interest from several top clubs for a long time, if you ask me if Sesko will move in January… I can only say, Sesko is an RB Leipzig player and they can answer these questions.”

Not much of an update at all there, granted, but he still doesn’t appear to be closing the door on the potential for his client to finally end up at the Emirates Stadium in January.

Not a transfer rumour but there is some huge news just breaking this morning with regards to Erling Haaland.

According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, Haaland has put pen to paper on a massive nine-and-a-half year deal at the Emirates Stadium that runs all the way through to 2034 and removes all previous exit clauses.

It is described as “among the most lucrative deals in sporting history”. Wow!

Yoane Wissa has emerged as a new name on the transfer radar in recent days, with Nottingham Forest said to be looking closely at the DR Congo forward – particularly if they lose Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi to West Ham this month.

However, they could yet face surprise competition from Arsenal, who are said to be admirers of Wissa themselves, per The Telegraph.

Chelsea could beat Liverpool to Karim Adeyemi

Friday 17 January 2025 07:27 , George Flood

Chelsea could beat Liverpool to the signing of Karim Adeyemi this month.

Both clubs have been strongly linked with the Borussia Dortmund winger over recent transfer windows.

Some claimed that Adeyemi turned down a potential switch to Stamford Bridge last summer, but Bild now report that Chelsea are still in talks over the German international.

The Telegraph, meanwhile, say that, while they are not currently in negotiations, a loan deal for Adeyemi could be a possibility for the Blues if they are unable to pull off a deal for any of the winger/forward targets they have already made contact over in January.

That of course includes Bayern Munich starlet Mathys Tel, who could be used as part of a deal involving Christopher Nkunku heading in the opposite direction.

The Premier League rivals are among a number of clubs believed to be interested in the Hungarian left-back, who continues to go from strength to strength with high-flying Bournemouth.

The I report that Liverpool are planning to “gazump” their rivals over £50m-rated Kerkez as they look to secure a long-term successor to current left-back stalwart Andy Robertson.

Arsenal ‘in talks’ over deal for Benjamin Sesko

It is also suggested that Arsenal may be in talks over a move for Benjamin Sesko.

The Slovenian international is another long-term striking target for the Gunners, having been heavily linked with a switch to north London last summer before eventually signing a new contract at RB Leipzig.

Sesko has continued to bang in the goals in Germany and tentative reports on social media site X – formerly Twitter – have claimed that Arsenal are now finally in discussions regarding a deal.

However, that speculation has been apparently dismissed by The Athletic’s David Ornstein.

Sesko’s agent, though, has done little to close the door on Arsenal in his latest update.

Arsenal ready to sign Viktor Gyokeres

Friday 17 January 2025 06:51 , George Flood

Arsenal are ready to launch a huge January move for Viktor Gyokeres, reports claim.

The prolific Sweden striker is a long-term target for the Gunners as they look to sign that new No9 that they so desperately need, particularly with Gabriel Jesus now out injured for the foreseeable future.

However, the Sporting Lisbon frontman was not expected to move on until the summer given the difficulties involved with agreeing such a massive transfer in the midseason window.

But according to French outlet L’Equipe, Arsenal are no longer reluctant to pay Gyokeres’ release clause of around £83m with the likes of rival targets Alexander Isak and Jonathan David believed to be out of reach this month.

Thursday 16 January 2025 23:36 , Alex Young

Benjamin Sesko’s agent has stoked reports of Arsenal interest in the striker during the January transfer window.

Arsenal are on the hunt for a new striker following Gabriel Jesus’s ACL injury, which is set to sideline him into next season.

Unsubstantiated reports emerged on Thursday that the Gunners were exploring a loan-to-buy deal for the RB Leipzig striker, though they were quickly shot down in both Germany and England.

Sesko has long been of interest to Arsenal, who remain admirers this month, and the player’s agent, Elvis Basanovic, believes his client has the ability to help Arsenal.

Asked if Sesko could play for the Gunners, Basanovic told Arena Sport: “I think you should ask Mr. Arteta about that.

“But I think Sesko could suit many clubs because he has different football skills. He can play alone in attack, with two strikers, a little further back, he has height, speed, and technical speed.

“Benjamin Sesko is really shining, I think this is a phase of development. I think we have already shown in the past that we are sticking to the development path, that we are not looking at current form.”

More on Arsenal as L’Equipe report that the Gunners are ready to make a move for Viktor Gyokeres.

The Sporting striker, who was expected to follow Ruben Amorim to Manchester United, could now be heading to another Premier League side.

The Gunners’ desperation for a striker following Gabriel Jesus’s injury has prompted the club to accelerate their own interest in the Swede.

He won’t come cheap though due to his £84m release clause.

Arsenal ‘working hard to make important signing’

Thursday 16 January 2025 22:31 , Alex Young

Arsenal are working hard in the transfer market to add to their squad this month, making calls about “important players around Europe”.

That’s according to Fabrizio Romano, who said: “Mikel Arteta already confirmed that Arsenal are working for a new addition.

“I can tell you that in the last 24 to 48 hours there were many calls from Arsenal to ask about important players around Europe.

“Arsenal are exploring opportunities for the striker position. Let’s see what they’re able to do, so a work in progress.”

No named are mentioned but the Gunners have been linked with Dusan Vlahovic, Jonathan David, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko.
